“I didn’t do fashion, I did the people in their clothes that became the fashion.” – Slim Aarons
The difference between fashion and style…… is the difference between the transient and the timeless. Driven by a journalistic curiosity about how the world’s most privileged people lived, Slim Aarons photographed luxury fashion’s evolution through the decades.
But he never used a stylist. Carrying little more than a camera and a tripod, he did not identify with the fantasy attached to fashion photography. He wanted to capture real people. I didn’t do fashion, the photographer once said. I did the people in their clothes that became the fashion.
He honed his craft as an army photographer in WWII. Slim Aarons: ‘I’ll only do a beach now if it has a blonde on it.’
