Jennette McCurdy’s searingly funny and lauded one-woman show “I’m Glad My Mom Died” is now a cutting and macabre memoir. McCurdy is a writer, director, podcaster, and reformed child star. In her youth she starred on teen comedies iCarly and its spin-off Sam & Cat - she was the Sam. Her early career was driven by her overbearing mother, and their relatively poor standing - young Jennette was Debra’s cash cow, groomed for Hollywood. As Lena Dunham’s blurb states, McCurdy’s story “illuminates the commodification of teenage girls in America.” Among many other sacrifices, Jennette was forced to watch her weight - five times a day - in a bid to live out her mother’s dreams of stardom. But when her mother dies of cancer, that weight is lifted. What follows is grief, freedom and healing. Join her as she works through its messiness. ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’ is available at Title on Crown Street and Barangaroo.@thestreetsofbarangaroo @surryhills.sydney

When you got it, flaunt it!George Lois certainly had it. ‘IT’ being talent, flair and the creative ability to say a thousand words using none at all. An accomplished art director, designer, author, George Lois subtly expressed his own opinion, commented on American pop culture, and used marketing as a tool for creativity and self expression. As an active designer, Lois designed 92 Esquire Magazine covers. His covers gave everyone a reminder of what to expect from Esquire - the unexpected. They symbolised American and global culture in one provocative image every month. His designs were ‘Too sophisticated to double as protest signs’ - He packed messages into his visuals and intended to trigger debate rather than agreement.Described as a ‘juxtaposition of celebrity odd couples’, his work with Braniff Airways changed the way we see marketing and design today. The series includes pairs of celebrites discussing unique and unlikely subjects - such as Whitey Ford and Slavador Dali talking baseball. His involvement with politics is both subtle and apparent. Being drafted by the army to fight in the Korean War at a young age, he has both expressed his disdain for political figures - depicting Senator Joe McCarthy as a dragon being slayed by Edward E. Murrows (1954), and assisted political figures in their campaigning - 'Let's put Bobby Kennedy to work for New York’ (1964).George Lois has changed pop culture and the way we digest media and politics forever. He has redefined marketing and the expression of intelligence, knowledge and opinion through visuals and creative means. @thestreetsofbarangaroo @surryhills.sydney

Evolution of SoundWithin 20 years The Arctic Monkeys have gone from riling up their neighbours, blasting music in their garage, to using every word in the dictionary in their lyrics. Their music captures the ever changing nature of life and the evolution of maturity.Releasing 7 albums since their formation in Sheffield in 2002, the band has redefined the music scene, and led the charge in innovative composition.Their first album, 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘚𝘢𝘺 𝘐 𝘈𝘮, 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐’𝘮 𝘕𝘰𝘵 (2006) saw the rebirth and revival of garage rock and headbanging tunes with fast tempos, impressive drum patterns and filthy guitar riffs. The band continued to redefine rock and create new and distinct sounds in their next 6 albums. From becoming a classic, accessible, rock band, to creating an album that follows a retired rockstar’s life on the moon. The Arctic Monkeys have transformed from an indie garage band, to a pioneer in the rebirth of brit rock, to a widely known pop/rock band, to a psychedelic glam rock artist. Most recently they have created their most foreign sound yet. Combining dense orchestral instrumentals with funk/jazz rhythms and 60s rock guitar riffs. The Arctic Monkeys have matured with its listeners, and have managed to reinvent themselves without losing their essence, and ultimately the continuity of simply making good music. Innocence with a Touch of RebellionIn and out of jail in between releasing romantic music that enchants, the paradox of music and life is at its clearest with Chet Baker. Dubbed the ‘Prince of Cool’ or more fittingly the ‘James Dean of Jazz’, Chet Baker lived what you’d describe a rather complicated life. Growing up in a musical family, with a pianist for a mother, and a professional guitarist for a father, Baker spent his life nurturing his natural talent as a trumpeter and singer. In between playing with the likes of Charlie Parker, the Gerry Mulligan Quartet and Art Pepper, he spent months on and off in jail for prescription fraud, drug abuse, and went as far as pawning his instruments to scrape enough to feed his addiction. On a night in 1966, after exuding charm and gifting his talent to the ears of those listening at the Trident Restaurant in Sausalito, he was beaten and left with cuts, knocked out teeth, and an inability to play the trumpet. He was forced to work at a gas station for 3 years. Baker later returned back home to Jazz, and while his voice was never the same, the final decade of his trumpet playing is often labelled his finest.Chet Baker's involvement in the Jazz scene is one of the purest representations of the paradox between life and music. Nevermind his rebellion and clash with the law, it’s best we get lost in his silky, moody, lush vocals, riddled with warmth and maturity, and his minimalist eloquence on the trumpet.@thestreetsofbarangaroo @surryhills.sydney

Why you need to get Miseducated.Released in 1998, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill remains one of the most enigmatic and celebrated debut solo albums in history. Whilst her previous outfit, the Fugees had been hugely successful, with Hill widely recognized as being key to their popularity – few were prepared for her stunning debut.Recorded in Jamaica at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong Studios, whilst a 22-year-old Hill was pregnant with Rohan Marley’s child, the album was full of overtly personal and political statements. With Hill firmly at the production controls, the album effortlessly fused elements of Neo-Soul, Hip Hop and Reggae and featured collaborations with D’Angelo, Mary J. Blige and Santana. The album also featured a 19-year-old unknown pianist named John R. Stephens, later to be dubbed John Legend. The album would go on to sell over 20 million copies, win 5 Grammys and Hill would become the first Hip Hop artist to grace the cover of Time Magazine. Despite all of this, she never made another studio album and chose to pursue a private life following the success of the record, raising her six children. In 2021, the album was voted #10 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of all time.Rarely in stock for long, get in quick before this iconic album disappears for another extended period.titlemusicfilmbooks.com/product/the-miseducation-of-lauryn-hill-vinyl@surryhills.sydney @thestreetsofbarangaroo @mslaurynhill
