Mainstream success came with the March 8, 1994 release of Superunknown. An immediate #1 album in the States, it netted Soundgarden two Grammys, shifted millions of units worldwide, and introduced the band to a mass TV audience via the video for Black Hole Sun. At the same time it explored a menacing interior landscape teeming with pain, fear, fury and defiance. As Rolling Stone concluded, “it demonstrates far greater range than many bands manage in an entire career.”

The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart. It attracted a 1995 Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album and two of the five singles released from the album won a Grammy – Black Hole Sun for Best Hard Rock Performance and Spoonman for Best Metal Performance.
