Rowland S. Howard
By the end of his stints in The Birthday Party and These Immortal Soul, Rowland S. Howard has already built a reputation as Australia’s premier anti-guitar hero. Teenage Snuff Film maybe filled to the brim with his usual brand of avant-garde dissonance and feedback, but it is merely the cherry on top of this sad and beautiful set of songs. There is a pervading dark and gloomy atmosphere evocative of film nor that perfectly accompanies the life gone wrong narrative of this album.
Never a dull moment, the jolting guitars and stoic strings shifts around Rowland’s frail croon as he lays out all of his life regret like a romantic tragedy. A miserable masterpiece.
